MySQL 5.7 : Playing with mysqlpump

MySQL 5.7 comes with a new backup tool, named mysqlpump, which is almost the same as mysqldump with the ability of extracting data in parallel threads.

I tried a little experiment. Using a server containing 11 databases, with a total of 300 tables and about 20 million rows (roughly ≈ 10GB,) I used both mysqldump and mysqlpump to get a backup.

The backup with mysqldump took 3 minutes and 33 seconds. The one with mysqlpump took 2 minutes and 55 seconds (saving 38 seconds). This does not seem to be a great gain. I experimented with several values of default-parallelism and different grouping of databases, and also without any parameters at all, but I always get the same time.

If there is a different way of invoking mysqlpump to use parallelism better, I would like to know.

There are four interesting points about mysqlpump that users should know:

  • mysqlpump has options to include and exclude objects (databases, tables, routines, users) from the backup. This is a long awaited feature that will be welcome by many DBAs.
  • The option --no-data is called --skip-dump-rows. (Just in case you want to use the new tool alternate way of reproducing DDL. But be aware that there is at least one bug)
  • A backup created with mysqlpump can only be loaded into a database of the same name. This is due to the parallel work, which requires that the INSERT statements contain both the database and the table names. But it means that, unlike with mysqldump, you can't backup tables from database X and load them to database Y.
  • The most serious limitation of mysqlpump, which I have seen both in the manual and in a blog article is that, while the backup is parallelized, the restore is serialized. Both sources say to run "mysqlpump > file.sql" and "mysql < file.sql". What is the advantage of extracting data with N parallel threads if I then need to apply it with a single thread? I would have expected an option to create N files, which I can then load using several background tasks, or even better an option in the mysql client to handle parallel backup files. I may be missing something here. I will appreciate comments by more savvy users.

The idea is good. The tool still has some rough edges, but I am sure it can be improved.

A few hacks to simulate mysqldump --ignore-database

A few days ago, Ronald Bradford asked for a mysqldump –ignore-database option.

As a workaround, he proposes:
mysqldump --databases `mysql --skip-column-names \
   -e "SELECT GROUP_CONCAT(schema_name SEPARATOR ' ') \
   FROM information_schema.schemata WHERE schema_name \
   NOT IN ('mysql','performance_schema','information_schema');" \
   >` >/mysql/backup/rds2.sql

It's a clever solution, but unfortunately it only works if you have a handful of schemas. If your databases happens to have several dozens (or hundreds or thousands) of schemas (which is where you need this option more), then the output will be truncated to the length of group_concat_max_len (by default, 1024.)

There are two alternative methods.

The all-shell method

This method lets shell commands filter the wanted databases. In its simplest way, it goes

mysqldump --all-databases $DATABASE_LIST

Notice that, when you use --all-databases, information_schema and performance_schema are filtered off by default.

This method works, because the default length of the command line in Unix is much longer than group_concat_max_len:

$ getconf ARG_MAX
131072  # Linux

$ getconf ARG_MAX
262144  # Mac OSX

(in Windows it's much shorter: 8191, but since I haven't used Windows for ages, I don't really care).

A more elaborate method would require a scripting wrapper around the above instructions, but I think that as it is, it's simple enough to be remembered.

The options file method

If the length of all your database names combined is more than the maximum allowed by the shell, and all you want is filtering a few databases off a huge list, there is still hope.

Let's assume that you want to ignore mysql, personnel, and buildings from your backup.

Now the options file looks like this:

[mysqldump]
ignore-table=mysql.db
ignore-table=mysql.host
ignore-table=mysql.user
[...]
What we need to do is tell mysqldump to get its information from this options file, and it will duly skip all the tables that are listed in there.
mysqldump --defaults-file=./mydump.cnf  -u $DBUSER -p$DBPWD --all-databases
There are two drawbacks with this approach:
  • There will be a DROP DATABASE IF EXISTS and CREATE DATABASE for each of the excluded schemas, although no tables will be dumped.
  • This method only works with --default-options-file. Theoretically, it should also work with --default-extra-file, but it doesn't. Therefore, if you are relying on an options file for connection parameters, they should be added to this file or listed in the command line.
Summing up, there is no perfect solution, but there are enough hacks available that you probably would find what suits you.

Excluding databases from mysqldump

A question that came up during the MySQL track at the UKOUG conference in Birmingham was "Can I exclude only a few databases from mysqldump? Let's say that I have 50 databases, and I want to dump all of them, except a few."
As many know, mysqldump has an option to ignore specific tables. SO if you have 1,000 tables in a databases, you can tell mysqldump to dump all the tables except a few ones.
There is no corresponding option to exclude one or more databases.
However, if you know your command line tools, the solution is easy:
First, we get the list of all databases:
mysql -B -N -e 'show databases'
information_schema
employees
five
four
mysql
one
performance_schema
six
test
three

-B forces batch mode (no dashes box around the data), while -N gets the result without the headers.
Now, let's say that we want to exclude databases four, five, and six. And since we want to avoid unpleasant side effects, also information_schema and performance_schema.
Thus, we pipe the previous data through a filter. I use Perl, but sed or grep could get the job done.

Now that we have the list of databases that we need, we can tell mysqldump to backup the databases from such list. All we need is converting the vertical list into a horizontal one using xargs

mysql -B -N -e 'show databases' | \
  perl -ne 'print unless /\b(?:four|five|six|_schema)\b/' \
  xargs echo mysqldump -B 
mysqldump -B employees mysql one test three two
That's it. The last line is the resulting command. Once you are sure that it is what you want, remove the "echo" after xargs, and the command will be executed.

Update: Thanks to Shantanu, who pointed that the regexp does not filter properly. So I added the boundary checks (\b) to make my words match the result.

Filtering mysqldump output


MySQLdump filter

Several people have suggested a more flexible approach at mysqldump output in matter of user privileges.
When you dump the data structure for views, triggers, and stored routines, you also dump the permissions related to such objects, with the DEFINER clause.
It would be nice to have such DEFINER clauses removed, or even replaced with the appropriate users in the new database.

The mysqldump filter was created with this need in mind. It allows you to remove all DEFINER clauses and eventually replacing them with a better one.
For example:

mysqldump --no-data sakila | dump_filter --delete > sakila_simple.sql
mysqldump --no-data sakila | dump_filter --replace='newuser@`10.%`' > sakila_secure.sql

The first example removes all references to DEFINER, while the second one replaces every definer with a new user name.

Update Since MySQL Forge is not available anymore, here's the code:

mysqldump unusual error

A friend of mine called me today, asking for advice on a baffling error.
He has just finished upgrading a database server from 4.1.20 to 5.0.45but, when attempting a backup to all databases with mysqldump, he gets a discomforting message:
mysqldump: Got error: 1044:
Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' to database 'information_schema'
when using LOCK TABLES
Of course, the error is doubly strange.
  • First, because mysqldump is not supposed to attempt dumping the information schema. I know for sure, since I had to write a special script to dump the I_S when I really needed to export its data.
  • Second, because there was actually a bug affecting this behavior, but it was fixed over one year ago.
Looking at the bug report, though, I saw that someone was complaining about this bug again recently.
I don't believe without action, so I rapidly installed a 5.0.45 and I tried to repeat the offending behavior. No luck. Everything worked as expected.
Then it dawned on me that perhaps he was not using the right mysqldump. I asked my friend to report the version of the dump, and indeed, it was a version that comes with MySQL 4.1.
Apparently, an old version of the client tools were still stuck in the OS execution path, before the directory where the new ones were installed.
A couple of minutes later, having cleaned the installation, all went well.
Lesson learned: before crying "bug", try "--version"!
